Thermal Experience & Rituals

What is thermotherapy?

Thermotherapy is the intentional use of hot and cold temperatures, followed by periods of rest, to create a restorative wellness experience.

At Forum Thermal, guests can move through different thermal environments at their own pace and participate in guided rituals offered throughout the day.

What’s the difference between thermotherapy and hydrotherapy?

Thermotherapy uses changes in temperature, typically moving between hot, cold and rest to create a restorative thermal experience.

Hydrotherapy specifically refers to the use of water for therapeutic or wellness purposes, including hot pools, cold plunges and other water-based experiences.

Forum Thermal brings elements of both together through our pools, saunas, steam environments, cold experiences and relaxation spaces.

What is an Aufguss sauna ritual?

Aufguss is a guided sauna ritual combining heat, essential-oil aromas and rhythmic towel movements.

During the ritual, one of our Wellness Guides introduces curated scents into the sauna and uses specialized towel techniques to circulate heat and aromatic steam throughout the space.

Forum Thermal’s Aufguss rituals are inspired by the natural elements of earth, air, water, fire and ether. Our rituals are developed by our Rituals Manager and Wellness Guide team, with multiple experiences offered throughout the day.

No two rituals are exactly the same, and we encourage guests to experience at least one during their visit.

Do I need a reservation to visit Forum Thermal?

Reservations are strongly recommended to ensure availability, as Forum Thermal operates with capacity limits to preserve the guest experience.Walk-in access may be available depending on capacity but cannot be guaranteed.

For massage treatments, advance reservations are highly recommended.

Coverage varies by insurance plan, so we recommend confirming your eligibility directly with your provider.

Do you offer prenatal massage?

Yes. We offer a specially adapted prenatal massage designed for expectant guests seeking rest and comfort during pregnancy. Treatments are provided by therapists trained in prenatal massage techniques and use pregnancy-appropriate positioning and pressure.

Prenatal massage is available to guests with an uncomplicated pregnancy, subject to completion of our health-intake form and therapist assessment. We recommend that guests consult their obstetrician, midwife, or other qualified prenatal-care provider before booking, particularly if they have a high-risk pregnancy or any medical concerns.

Prenatal massage does not include participation in the hydrothermal circuit. During pregnancy, we do not recommend use of hot pools, saunas, steam rooms, cold plunges, or contrast therapy.

Please contact our Guest Services team before booking so we can confirm treatment suitability and help tailor a relaxing visit.

Can I enjoy the hydrothermal experience while pregnant?

For the comfort and safety of our guests, we do not recommend participation in the full hydrothermal cycle during pregnancy. This includes hot pools, saunas, steam rooms, cold plunges, and repeated hot–cold exposure, which may affect body temperature, circulation, and blood pressure.

We encourage expectant guests to consult their qualified healthcare provider before visiting. Depending on individual circumstances and medical advice, you may still be able to enjoy selected non-thermal amenities, such as our relaxation spaces, lounge areas, dining, retail, and any specifically designated temperate-water or wellness offerings. How long should I use a sauna or steam room?

Typically, 10–20 minutes is a comfortable range. However, everyone responds to heat differently, so the most important thing is to listen to your body and stay only as long as you feel comfortable. You’re always welcome to step out, cool down and rest whenever needed.

Do I have to use the cold plunge?

No. Cold plunging is completely optional. After heat exposure, we encourage you to rest and cool down at a temperature that feels comfortable for you. There is no need to force rapid cooling or alternate between extreme heat and cold to enjoy your thermal experience.

Cold plunges are available for guests who enjoy them, but they are never required.

How do I maximize the health benefits of thermotherapy?

Typically thermal spas recommend that guests cycle between hot (15mins), cold (30s-3mins), and rest (20-30mins) experiences. But there’s no perfect way to do it. To maximize the health benefits of thermotherapy:

  • Use moderate heat regularly rather than seeking extreme temperatures.
  • Start gradually and increase duration as tolerated.
  • Stay well hydrated before and after.
  • Rest and cool down comfortably afterward.
  • Avoid heat when dehydrated, ill, or under the influence of alcohol.
  • Stop if you feel dizzy, faint, confused, or unwell.
  • If you have a medical condition or take medications affecting blood pressure or hydration, check with your clinician first.
